Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Town Board of New Independence opted to be a mail-in ballot precinct for the upcoming 2020 General Election.
All REGISTERED VOTERS will receive a mail-in ballot from the Election Office of St. Louis County. You do not have to request one. Complete your ballot and return it in the envelope that will be with your ballot OR you can personally return it to the St. Louis County Election Office on November 3, 2020.
If you are a NEW VOTER in New Independence or if you are a REGISTERED VOTER WHO WOULD PREFER TO VOTE IN PERSON, curbside voting will be available at either of the County locations (Duluth or Virginia) between the hours of 8:00 am and 4:30 pm., Monday through Friday, starting September 18, 2020. On November 3, the Duluth Elections Office will accept curbside voting up until 8:00 pm, which is the legal closing time for all polls in Minnesota. Since the Court House is not currently open to the public, you will need to call the Duluth Elections Office at (218) 726-2385. Staff from that office will make arrangements with you for curbside voting.
NEW REGISTRANTS will need to bring proof of identity (example: your driver’s license or ID) and proof of residency (example: a utility bill with your current New Independence address). The proof of residency can be on an electronic device such as your phone. A complete list of items accepted is found on the Secretary of State’s website.
If you have an email address, NEW VOTERS can register at the Secretary of State's website. Once you are registered, you can request an absentee ballot for the General Election. Just click on the button below.
If you do not have an email address, you will have to complete the paper application, which can be obtained from the clerk, the Secretary of State's website, or the St. Louis County Elections Office. Applications should be returned to the County Auditor's office by mail, fax, or e-mail and will be forwarded to the appropriate city, town, or school district clerk if necessary.
