Joint Powers with Alborn

For many years, New Independence has joined with Alborn to offer fire protection services for homes in New Independence. As part of the agreement, the costs are shared (Alborn 60% and New Independence 40%). This ratio was established when the initial agreement was written and is based on a formula suggested by the State.

The agreement is overseen by the Joint Powers, which is comprised of a representative from each township and the fired chief:

Alborn: Kurt Johnson, Supervisor
New Independence: Kurt C. Johnson, Supervisor
Fire Chief: Jack Carlson

Upcoming Alborn Fire Department 2024 & 2025 Levy

Fire Chief Jack Carlson presented the Alborn Fire Department Levy for 2025 to the New Independence Town Board at the February board meeting. In the past, the fire department's request has increased annually by 5% but will decrease to 3% for 2025.

Categories not included in the proposed levy are:

Administrative Fee (equally accessed)
Equipment Fund for future replacement of equipment (60/40 split applied)

Residents will consider this budget as part of the 2025 Levy, which will be set at the Annual Meeting on March 12, 2024.
